The world is a truly extraordinary place. It is home to everything from vast arid deserts and dense rainforests to coral reefs and higher grasslands.
But have you always stopped to wonder how many different biomes there are on our planet?
In this article, we'll take a look at the 26 amazing types of biomes that you can spot beyond the earth. We'll explain what makes a biome a biome, and give you clues about the various plants and animals that call each of these different ecosystems home.
What is a biome?
The word
'biome'
It may sound straightforward enough, but there is actually quite a bit of disagreement among researchers about what the discussion actually means.
Different organizations have their own definitions of what a biome is, however they all effectively state that a biome is an expanse with a shared climate that can support a specific group of flora and fauna.
This definition seems quite simple. The problem is simply that information technology makes it difficult to distinguish the discussion 'biome' from words and phrases like 'ecoregion' and 'ecological zone'.
Depending on whom you consult, a biome can be defined as a collection of ecoregions or ecological zones. These ecoregions also contain ecosystems, and these ecosystems comprise different types of habitats. But again, this is still a matter of debate in various scientific circles and some researchers do not make a distinction between 'biome' and 'ecoregion'.
So that things are not problematic, in this article we will focus on how the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) classifies biomes. The beginning of the system began to classify the biomes with their
world 200projection. It lists 26 types of biomes (these are called ecoregions in some WWF posts) that we will discuss here.
26 Spectacular Types of Biomes of the World
On a planet with tens of millions of animal and established species, classifying the different parts of the Earth by their flora, brute, and climate is not easy. Fortunately, some defending scientists have washed our hard work and we now accept this list of the 26 types of biomes.
Next, we will take a closer look at the 26 types of biomes defined by the WWF. That way you can get an expert on all things global ecology.

Our main offset group of biomes is the
terrestrial biomes. All of these biomes encompass found communities and of creatures found on land. So without further ado, here are the 14 terrestrial biomes of our planet.
1.1 Deserts and Xeric Shrublands
The first on our list is the
deserts and xeric shrublands biome. This biome exists in vast tracts around the world and information technology includes everything from the Australian outback to the Sahara desert.
Here, precipitation amounts are typically less than x inches (25 cm) per year. However, these deserts can be hot deserts, like the Mojave, or cold deserts, like the Gobi.
Most of the vegetation in this biome is well adapted to life in an arid environment. Cross-establishing species include various succulents. Many of the almost iconic animal species of the biome, such as the various types of camels, are all too capable of surviving for days or weeks without water.
1.2 Tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests

bosque tropical. You can find this biome in tropical latitudes and includes places like the Amazon rainforest and the jungles of Southeast Asia.
A defining characteristic of these forests is their high level of almanac precipitation. Most of these forests receive more than 200 cm (79 in) of precipitation each year, and sometimes much more.
These forests are some of the most biodiverse places on the Globe, as their high levels of humidity and warm temperatures allow a wealth of flora and beasts to thrive. Tropical forests typically have dumbo foliage and can support a variety of amazing animals, such as various
types of big cats.
i.3 Tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forests
Tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf foreststhey are often found in areas adjacent to tropical rainforests. These regions, which include much of the southern Mexican United States and the Indian subcontinent, experience warm temperatures throughout the year.
The difference between tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forests and tropical rainforests is that dry forests have a long annual dry season. As a problem, they tend to be slightly less biodiverse than tropical forests.
However, this biome is home to a beautiful collection of flora and fauna. You can often find various types of monkeys, as well as an incredible variety of birds in these dry forests.
i.4 Tropical and subtropical coniferous forests

tropical and subtropical coniferous forestsThe biome is found primarily in North America, Central America, and in highland areas of south-central Asia. Almost all of these forests are found in Mexico, particularly in the Sierra Madre del Sur and Sierra Nevada mountain ranges in the south of the state.
Unlike other tropical and subtropical hardwood biomes, this biome is dominated beyond the coniferous grove. They get relatively low levels of precipitation and often experience cooler temperatures than other nearby biomes.
The vegetation in this biome is dominated by a thick canopy of conifers, which prevents sunlight from reaching the forest floor. As such, this biome frequently features a large number of fungal and fern species.
1.5 Temperate broadleaf and mixed forests

temperate broadleaf and mixed forest biomeIt is one of the almost widespread biomes on the planet. It is found south across most of eastern North America, western Europe, eastern Asia, southern South America, and eastern Australia.
A key characteristic of these forests is that they experience substantial variation in temperature and precipitation throughout the year. Many of these forests have marked seasons.
The species of trees in these forests can vary, only typically including various oaks, birch, beech, and even maple. Wild animals also vary greatly throughout temperate broadleaf and mixed forests, only different types of squirrels, deer, chamois, and bears are common.
1.6 Temperate coniferous forests
temperate coniferous foreststhey are very similar to tropical and subtropical coniferous forests in terms of their forest cover. In addition, they are found at higher latitudes in places like the western United States and Canada, cardinal Asia, and coastal Norway.
Most of these forests experience warm summers, although their winters can vary from mild in coastal areas to common cold in inland areas. Depending on the region, these forests can also receive large amounts of snow during the winter.
The major tree species in these coniferous forests include everything from cedar, fir, pine, and fir, to towering sequoias and giant sequoias. Animal species may include elk, moose, deer, bear, and bobcat.
1.seven boreal forests and taiga
Boreal forests and taigait is a biome that is exclusive to northern latitudes. This biome is found in the subpolar regions of North America, Europe, and Asia, particularly in northern Canada and Siberia.
In this biome, nutrient-poor soils, common cold temperatures, and high snow levels limit species richness. Boreal forests and taiga can support stands of conifers and some deciduous trees, birch, cottonwood, aspen, and similar cottonwood.
Additionally, the boreal forest and taiga are home to a number of iconic animal species including reindeer, cold foxes, snowshoe hares, brown bears, lynx, and moose. From time to time, polar bears roam the taiga, but they mostly settle in the tundra.
1.viii Tropical and subtropical grasslands, savannahs and shrublands

tropical and subtropical grasslands, savannahs and shrublandsit is one of the largest biomes beyond the total land area. It is found throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa, northern Australia, and the subtropical region of South America. This biome is too vegetal in parts of Hawaii.
Almost all of this biome is dominated by areas with a semi-arid climate where the extent of forests is limited. This includes areas similar to the Serengeti in East Africa and the Kimberly tropical savannahs in the Commonwealth of Australia.
Despite the often arid nature of much of this biome, it is quite biodiverse. The main tree species include the baobab and the acacia. Meanwhile, major animal species include everything from zebras and wildebeests in sub-Saharan Africa to pampas deer and capybaras in South America.
1.nine temperate grasslands, savannahs, and shrublands
Temperate grasslands, savannahs, and shrublands are found in North and South America, Asia, eastern Europe, and the south-eastern Commonwealth of Australia. The prairies of North America, the steppe of Asia, and the pampas of South America are more than ordinarily familiar alike.
Surrounding these grasslands, savannahs, and scrublands are dry areas that experience wide fluctuations in temperature. The land is mostly tree free. Rather, this biome is dominated by drought-tolerant grasses and other shrubs.
Animal species vary beyond the specific location. Only you can observe buffalo on the North American grasslands, antelopes and kiangs on the Central Asian steppes, and guancos on the South American pampas.
1.10 Flooded grasslands and savannahs
Flooded grasslands and savannahsit is one of the smallest biomes in the world by complete land area. This biome is found only in small areas of North America, South America, Asia, and Africa. It includes famous places like the Florida Everglades and the Pantanal in Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia.
As its name suggests, the Flooded Grasslands and Savannas biome features wetlands that receive high levels of rainfall. Although this biome covers only a small portion of the Earth's surface to the south, information technology plays a critical role in supporting the migration of countless bird species.
For example, the South Florida Everglades is home to more than 300 bird species, while the Pantanal is home to more than 700 bird species. Other notable animals found in this biome include alligators, alligators, swamp deer, hunting dogs, tapirs, capybaras, and giant anteaters.
1.11 Montane grasslands and shrublands
I of the few biomes that are planted only at high elevations, the
montane grasslands and shrublandsbiome is a unique collection of flora and animals that thrives in harsh climates. This biome is found in South America, early Asia, parts of Africa, and throughout New Zealand.
Arguably the most famous example of these montane grasslands and shrublands is that of the páramo in South America. The paramo is quite wet and cold, although there are some slightly drier montane grasslands found in the Ethiopian Highlands.
The dominant plant species in this biome include grasses, shrubs, and acacias. In general, you won't find many trees in this biome, but you may find some clumps of coppices in nearby savannas and tropical grasslands. Wildlife species that are unique to this biome include the northern pudu (the world's smallest deer) and the Ethiopian wolf.
1.12 tundra

tundrait is an amazing biome found simply in the northernmost and southernmost latitudes of the planet. It is defined as a treeless polar wilderness and you can only experience information technology in Scandinavia, Alaska, Russia, Greenland, the Republic of Iceland, Canada, and the sub-Antarctic islands.
In the tundra, only the strongest plants and animals can survive. This biome features pocket-sized heaths, sedges, and dwarf shrubs, though there are also areas of bare rock and minimal vegetation.
Many of the species found in the taiga can also be found in the tundra. However, the northern tundra is also home to musk oxen and polar bears. Southern tundra, on the other hand, is found primarily in South Georgia, the Kerguelen Islands, and the South Sandwich Islands. These islands are home to several species of penguins, such as the royal penguin.
i.13 Mediterranean Forests, Groves and Shrublands
Although its name may indicate that it is actually only found in the Mediterranean, the
Mediterranean forests, groves and scrub
biomeIt is found in various hot and dry places around the world. For the most part, this biome is found in coastal locations, such as southern California and southern South Africa, which experience hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters.
This biome is sometimes known as chaparral, especially in California, and as scrub in South America. The vegetation in this biome can form mosaics where patches of different vegetation blend seamlessly with each other.
While some areas of this biome are generally grassland, stands of oak woodland can often be found, especially in riparian areas. Much of this biome also experiences regular wildfires, which are detrimental to maintaining the long-term health of its many ecosystems.
1.14 Mangroves
It is found along the tropical and subtropical coasts,
mangrovesthey are a unique type of wood that thrives in waterlogged and salty soils. You can find mangroves in the intertidal zones in the lower latitudes. The most famous examples are found in places like the Philippines and Vietnam.
Only a select number of tree species can thrive on the salty soils of the world's mangroves. Researchers estimate that there are nearly sixty species of trees that live in mangroves, such as the red mangrove, mangrove palm, and black mangrove.
Unfortunately, the mangroves are at risk of being destroyed due to human development. Since mangroves exist in coastal areas, many have been damaged, destroyed, or completely removed in gild to build shoreline bottom and develop port facilities around the world.

In addition to terrestrial biomes, WWF also classifies biomes as freshwater or marine. There are seven types of freshwater biomes, each of which can be found in various lakes, rivers, and streams throughout the world.
2.1 Great rivers
He
great riversThe biome is established in some of the largest rivers in the world. This includes higher flowing rivers like the Colorado and Mississippi in North America, as well as the Yangtze in communist China and the Congo in sub-Saharan Africa.
There are also too many species of fish in these rivers to possibly name here. But many of these large rivers accept endemic fish species, such as the slightly electrified fish.

2.2 Headwaters of large rivers
While the great rivers biome encompasses much of the major rivers on earth, the
large headwaters biomeincludes only its header areas. These headwater areas often support unique fish species that are adapted to life in the mountainous areas where the major rivers originate.
This biome mainly includes the waters of the Upper Amazon, the Congo Bowl Piedmont, and the Mississippi Piedmont, among other areas. Species that are adapted to life in these cold, fast-flowing waters help create a freshwater environment that supports countless downstream ecosystems.
2.3 Large river deltas
River deltas are the sediment-filled areas at the oral fissure of a river, just before information technology reaches the ocean, lake, or sea where it ends. He
great river deltaThe biome mainly includes the deltas at the mouths of the world's major rivers, such as the Nile, Amazon, Orinoco, Lena, and Volga rivers.
Most river deltas are incredibly biodiverse areas. This is particularly true when information technology reaches rivers that flow into the ocean because the mix of salt and fresh water in these environments creates unique ecosystems where plants and animals can thrive.
One of the largest river deltas on earth is that of the Niger River. The Niger actually has two deltas (one inland and one littoral), both of which are hotspots for biodiversity.
2.four little rivers
When we think of biodiverse freshwater ecosystems, we often film huge rivers and lakes. Even so, the
modest riversbiome includes some of the richest freshwater ecosystems in temperate and tropical latitudes.
This biome is found all over the world, including in places like New Caledonia, Madagascar, and the Greater Antilles. It consists mainly of smaller streams, similar to those in southwestern Australia, which are centers of biodiversity.
2.5 Great Lakes
The world's largest lakes to the south, such as Lake Baikal and the Bully Lakes, comprise fascinating ecosystems. Large lake systems, such as the Rift Valley lakes in East Africa, also fall under this biome.
Each of these lakes contains a different flora and fauna, but all share equally high levels of endemism. For example, about lxxx percent of Lake Baikal's creature species are endemic, including the amazing
Sello de Baikal.
2.six small lake ecosystems
pocket lakesThey may not seem like biodiversity hotspots, but they are home to amazing ecosystems. This is especially true in tropical areas where the sheer number of fish species that can be found in a smaller lake is estimated to be phenomenal.
For example, Lake Kutubu in Papua New Guinea is nearly 12 miles (nineteen kilometers) long and 2.8 miles (4.5 kilometers) wide, but contains 13 endemic fish species. Meanwhile, Lake Lanao in the Philippines is 21 miles (33 km) long and 12 miles (twenty km) wide, only home to about 18 endemic fish species.
2.7 Xeric basins
The last freshwater biome is the
xeric basins. Interestingly, these are areas with relatively insignificant permanent surface water. Rather, these xeric basins are home to a multitude of freshwater springs, which help life thrive in otherwise arid environments.
The major xeric basins are found in locations similar to central Australia, the Chihuahuan desert, and the Anatolian region of Turkey. For example, the Cuatro Ciénegas Basin in Mexico is home to three endemic species of turtles, eight species of fish, and multiple species of snails, despite being located in the heart of the desert.
3. Marine Biomes
Concluding but not in the lowest degree, we have the marine biomes. These biomes are also water based, but only include bodies of salt water. The world's oceans are incredibly biodiverse, and each of these 5 marine biomes contains an excellent variety of flora and fauna.
iii.ane Polar

polar oceans, you can imagine cold, dark waters where little life can thrive. However, the polar oceans are some of the most biodiverse areas in the world due to their low temperatures and low salinity levels, which can support some truly amazing corporeality of plankton.
As a result, the polar oceans, which include the Arctic Sea, the Southern Ocean, and surrounding seas, are home to thousands of species that depend on plankton, either directly or indirectly, for survival.
This includes baleen whales like the humpback, blue whale, and bowhead whale, plus penguins, orcas, and dozens of
types of stamps. The polar oceans are also home to incredible bird species, including albatrosses, petrels, terns, and the equally varied fulmars.
3.2 Shelf and temperate seas
Located in the waters and along the coasts of temperate regions, the
shelf and temperate seasThe biome is one of the almost bioproductive areas of the planet. This includes the Mediterranean, temperate North Atlantic, and temperate North Pacific oceans.
Much of this biome is relatively shallow, with almost all of the continental shelves no more than 490 feet (150 m) deep. Here, they can also view some of the world's most important southern temperate estuaries, such as the Chesapeake Bay, which serve equally important habitats for migratory birds and marine life.
3.3 Temperate upwelling

temperate outcropbiome primarily refers to the coastal areas of western North and South America where upwelling waters support a large number of fish species.
In these areas, which include the coast of Peru, the Republic of Ecuador, Chile, Mexico, and California, upwelling cold, nutrient-rich waters support enormous populations of fish and seabirds. These areas are also home to some of our most important commercial fisheries, particularly in areas affected by the Humboldt and California currents.
3.iv Tropical Upwelling

tropical outcropThe biome is another highly bioproductive surface area that is driven south by upwelling of common cold, nutrient-rich waters in littoral environments. This biome is somewhat easy to identify on ocean surface temperature maps because it exists in pockets of unusually cold water in tropical seas.
For example, the waters of the Canary Current near the Canary Islands are often colder than they would otherwise be. Yet this cold, nutrient-rich water is essential for supporting countless species of fish, birds, and sea turtles.
iii.five tropical corals
Finally, we have the
tropical coralsbiome. This aptly named biome includes all of the world's southern coral reefs, including Australia's Groovy Barrier Reef.
Of all the marine biomes, the tropical coral biome is arguably the most biodiverse. there are thousands of
types of coralson our planet, most of which settle in the tropical coral biome. Additionally, these coral reefs are home to hundreds of species of fish, including many found nowhere else on Earth.
How are biomes classified?
In this article, we focus on the 26 types of biomes defined by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). However, this is simply one way of classifying the biomes on Earth.
There are dozens of other biome classification systems. While we can't list them all here, we can point out some of the top systems you should know about.

These two systems are fairly basic, but each organization's broad categories of southern biomes can be further subdivided into more than specific biomes. For example, National Geographic's southern aquatic biome can be subdivided into freshwater and marine and then further subdivided beyond that location.
Ultimately, there will be no consensus on how we should classify biomes. The definition of each biome type is also constantly evolving as we learn more than just about the world around us.
